We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Senior Design Engineer.  The successful candidate will have extensive experience in designing, documenting, inspecting, and implementing tooling, fixtures, and equipment into a production environment, often from a concept phase or transitioning from a prototype.  Ideal candidate will have a background in medical device assembly and be able to support a cross functional team made of material scientists, process engineers, quality engineers, technicians, and operators.
Job Duties:
  • Lead the design, oversee fabrication, and complete validation activities of tooling and equipment required for medical device component assembly operations.
  • Interface closely with equipment suppliers, internal tooling fabrication department, and external shops to assure new tooling and machinery is built and integrated into production to specifications.
  • Work seamlessly with process engineers, R&D engineers, quality engineers, and technicians to fully support manufacturing operations
  • Support continuous improvements through lean initiatives, automation, modification of existing equipment and tooling, and new equipment development.
  • Own projects from inception through production implementation to ensure equipment validation is complete and comprehensive.
  • Ensures technical outcomes are consistent with established engineering principles and practices and that customer and company technical, system, performance, and quality requirements are met.
  • Advise EHS, Operations, Engineering, and suppliers on OSHA-compliance and safe operating procedures for machinery and equipment designed.
  • Investigate equipment and tooling failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and make remediation and continuous improvements to legacy designs.
  • Partner with peers to establish requirements for next-generation manufacturing processes, equipment, and tooling, and collaborate with equipment suppliers for development.
  • May deliver technical presentations. Performs technical analysis, testing, calculations, and evaluation of results to solve moderately complex engineering problems using specialized equipment and/or by computer programs.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of latest manufacturing trends and advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Design, develop, and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, equipment layouts, and electrical schematics using drafting tools, computer-aided design (CAD)/drafting equipment and software, and computer-generated reports.
  • Inspect fabricated hardware to assure compliance to design and generate reports/documentation
  • Recommend modifications to equipment and/or tooling to eliminate machine and system malfunctions, minimize/eliminate operator errors, eliminate reoccurring equipment issues, increase efficiency, increase output, decrease set-up time, and decrease cost.
  • Review engineering drawings and designs of peers for manufacturability
  • Provide input for equipment and systems components, or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in Tooling/Mechanical design
  • 10+ years of equivalent experience plus technical certifications in lieu of degree will also be considered
  • 15+ years of equivalent experience without a degree will also be considered
  • Strong computer skills including knowledge of Windows based programs
  • Expertise with design software (SolidWorks or Creo)
  • Allen-Bradley software programming experience, including RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000 Logix Designer a plus
  • Experience with CMM equipment, optical comparators, and inspection equipment required
  • Understanding of PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, servos and drives, robotics, and other industrial controls required.
  • Strong organizational skills in managing time, projects and resources
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with technical attention to detail
  • Previous battery industry experience is a plus.
